SANTA MARGHERITA, SAN FRUTTUOSO AND PORTOFINO – Day Hike + Sightseeing – Level EASY 1920 1280 TrekMI

A wonderful itinerary that develops between the Tigullio gulf and the promontory of Portofino, places of incredible natural beauty and charm. We leave the city of Milan and reach Santa Margherita Ligure after 2.5h. This beautiful seaside old-fashioned resort, with palm trees decorating the esplanade, will be our starting point for an exciting boat ride to San Fruttuoso. Accessible only from the sea or on foot, this tiny secluded bay of turquise water hides an ancient Benedectine monastery that dates back to the 10th century A.D. The perfect place to spend our lunch break before starting the hike to world-famous Portofino (2h). A panoramic and well-travelled itinerary that develops through the lush vegetation of this Regional Park. Portofino a prettily-painted charming fishing village has become a boutiquey stop-off for the yatching set and a tranquill not-to-be-missed place along this stretch of coastline. After spending some time enjoying its atmosphere, we catch our last boat ride back to Santa Margherita and from there we start our drive back to Milan.

The Matterhorn (referred to as “Cervino” in the Italian language) can be approached on the italian side by following the valley that stretches south of it. The view areas along the way are quite many and we are choosing one the best! From the litlle settlement of Buisson we first let a cable car bring us up to the car-free village of Chamois. From here we start hiking along a well-travelled path, passing by Lake Lod and reaching the Cheneil Pass with views over the Matterhorn. We continue descending towards the village of Cheneil, our lunch spot with a great view! We can now retrace our steps back to Chamois and from there down to street level by cable car.

SAN MARTINO’S CHURCH AND BELLAGIO – Day Hike + Sightseeing – Level EASY 1024 683 TrekMI

The church of San Martino is without any doubt one of the best view points to admire Lake Como’s unique shape. Perched on an apparently unreachable ledge of limestone that overlooks the village of Griante, San Martino’s church rises right in front of the peninsula of Bellagio – the peninsula that separates the two southern branches, giving Lake Como the shape of a “standing man”.  Located at 475 m (1,560 ft), the church can easily be reached with an hike of about one hour. A good compromise for an amazing view!

Hiking to the church in the morning gives us the time to enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and then, back by the shore, to catch a ferry boat right in time to spend our lunch break in Bellagio! Bellagio, as beautiful as you imagine it, with its picture-perfect cobbled lanes, colorful houses and botanical gardens. Here we take the time to enjoy some good local food with lake view, discover some hidden corners and get to know all facts about this so called “pearl” of Lake Como.

LITTLE YOSEMITE – Day Hike – Level EASY or MODERATE 2000 1333 TrekMI

Declared a Natural Reserve in 2009 and today the largest one in the Lombardy Region, Val di Mello lies 130 kms (80 mi) north of Milan, on the border with Switzerland. Val di Mello gets its namesake (Italian Little Yosemite) for features resembling some of the majestic formations found in California’s Yosemite Valley: imposing walls and domes of polished granite rock modelled by glaciation, streams, pools and waterfalls of crystal-clear icy water. A scenic background for the valley’s lush mountain meadows of exceptional natural beauty!

Val di Mello has been attracting climbers and bouldering practitioners from all over Europe and continues to be a “mecca” for adventure lovers. Also a magical place for hikers and families looking for both fun and time to relax. From the nearest village (easily accessible by car) is an easy hike along the river up to the most spectacular pools where one can spend the day swimming or relaxing by the water. Here you can find a variety of mountain huts serving delicious traditional food.

For hikers who want a little more challenge and even more spectacular views, the ascent to the higher meadows is highly recommended. A good option to consider for a more immersive experience of this amazing valley. Not giving up an opportunity for a dip in the water or tasting some delicious local food on the way down!

WAYFARER’S PATH – Day Hike – Level EASY, MODERATE or DEMANDING 2000 1333 TrekMI

Half-way up the hills on the Eastern side of Lake Como, a series of ancient cobblestone paths and mule trails connect charming little shoreline villages to the higher altitude pristine meadows. Where they merge, a longer trail begins known today as the Wayfarer’s Path (“Sentiero del Viandante” in Italian). Over the centuries, this well traveled trail was used by wayfarers, pilgrims and traders heading to the planes and the higher alpine passes. This path overlooks spectacular views of Lake Como featuring olive tree plantations along the shore as well as chestnut, oak, and spruce forests higher up on the mountain sides. While immersing ourselves into this lush natural region we’ll explore the less-touristy side of this spectacular lake. The whole path is 45 kms long (28 miles) and it takes four days to cover it all. We are opting only for a one day hike, but it will be enough to experience the most beautiful and panoramic section of the trail. Keeping the little picture-perfect village of Varenna as our focal point, we can choose between three different levels of hiking difficulty:

  • Easy: from Varenna to Bellano, including a visit to the gorge of Bellano (optional)
  • Moderate: from Lierna to Varenna (lower route)
  • Demanding: from Lierna to Varenna (higher route)

In all three cases the transportation from/to Milan will be organized by train.
